Water, the natural medicine

In West there is a “pattern” that suggests everybody should drink at least 2 liters of water per day, but it should not be a “formula”. The correct indication is to first check if this person is healthy and then, a healthy adult can take about 35 ml of water per kilo of body weight. Otherwise it is very important a checkup as excess of water can cause serious heart, brain and kidneys problems.

Ayurveda has existed for thousands years under the action of five elements of nature, Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth, which are the base of our different characteristics, the Doshas. Among these elements we can emphasize the importance of Water and it’s influence in our existence. As an important element of nature, water also is more than 70% of human being bodies, keeping them hydrated and healthy. Besides internal and external body cleansing, water acts on subtle areas of mind and emotions. Do you remember any sensation you felt when you went to the sea, or in contact with a waterfall or even sitting near a water fountain? Remember the freshness you feel when you drink fresh water in a hot day…

All these actions and many others explain how important the water is to our existence and, as much as western medicine, Ayurveda also suggests the consumption of water, specially water boiled for 10 minutes. The difference is the respect for an individual and his personal characteristics (Dosha).

In Ayurveda, it is necessary to know first which element (s) are imbalanced, and then to give a personalized prescription. Also is said that if a person has water retention it is nonsense to suggest more intake of water as it will cause more accumulation in the body. So, it is important to control how much water this person drinks and to prescribe some specific herbs, massages, treatments and bodywork to eliminate the excess of water.

Water cleans internal and external tissues, so it is important to clean all toxins of body by drinking hot or lukewarm water to promote good health and longevity.

Avoid drinking during meals

We should avoid drinking any beverage during meals, even water in excess. Of course it is possible to drink some sips of room temperature or lukewarm water or herb tea. Water strengthens Agni (digestive fire) and helps to digest food. Cold water is bad for all people. It gives a false sensation of freshness, but can block the channels where food, toxins and energy flow. “Ice cold water is poison to the system, because it cools down Agni,” “Hot water is nectar”, says Dr. Vasant Lad.

Drink hot or lukewarm water

Drinking hot or lukewarm water is very healthy and one of the main Ayurveda indications. We can’t compare it to drink herb tea, as herbs work differently in our digestion.

Therefore, there is a very good habit you can start tomorrow morning after you wake up. Drink a glass of hot or lukewarm water. At last, this is a way to wake up your body gently, preparing it to start its functions gradually. Besides, drinking water in an empty stomach helps to clean digestive system, to have good evacuation and to clean the urinary system.

• People who suffer of constipation feel immediately the benefits of this habit.

A good fellow in weight loss

For the ones who wish to lose weight, hot water is a great natural medicine. Some sips of hot water during the day help to clean toxins of digestive system, enhance digestion power and the absorption of food, open channels and control food craving. Many times you are not hungry, but thirsty.

Remember that to clean a sink you use hot water and the fat is eliminated. Imagine the same action in your body.
